01 / The foundation

Metals, thoughtfully explained

The metal beneath the finish is just as important as the colour you see. Here is how to understand the different bases used across our collection.

925 sterling silver

Sterling silver contains 92.5% silver, blended with other metals. You will find it in selected MAVISSE pieces, including our Heart Spark Moissanite Studs. Some silver designs also have a gold or rhodium-plated finish, which is specified in their description.

Care note: silver can tarnish over time. For plated silver, follow the care advice for the outer finish rather than using an abrasive silver polish.

Stainless steel

Stainless steel forms the base of selected designs, including the Golden Hour Layers Necklace. Its base metal and any surface plating are separate parts of the jewellery: a steel base does not make every finish immune to wear.

Care note: wipe with a soft cloth and dry carefully after contact with moisture. Protect plated surfaces from repeated rubbing and chemicals.

Brass

Brass is used beneath the gold-plated finish of pieces such as the Lunara Set and Golden Arc Necklace. The base gives the design its shape, while the outer plating creates its golden colour. The exact finish varies by product.

Care note: keep plated brass dry where possible. Store each piece separately to help prevent scratches and friction against other jewellery.

Understanding the finish

Gold plating is a surface layer

A description such as “14K gold-plated brass” means the piece has a layer of 14-carat gold over a brass base. It does not mean the whole piece is solid gold. Similarly, rhodium plating is a surface finish over the metal described on the product page.

Plating can gradually wear with use. Its appearance and lifespan depend on the piece, friction, storage and exposure to water, cosmetics or cleaning products. We do not give one wear-life guarantee for every design.

02 / The finishing detail

Light, colour and character

A clear stone, an iridescent inlay or a softly coloured detail can change the whole feeling of a piece. These materials each have their own identity, and their names are not interchangeable.

Cubic zirconia

Cubic zirconia, often shortened to CZ or described as zirconia, is a manufactured stone chosen for its sparkle. It features in designs such as the Lunara Set. It is different from both diamond and moissanite.

Moissanite

Moissanite is a distinct gemstone with its own optical properties. It is used in selected MAVISSE designs, including the Heart Spark Moissanite Studs. Moissanite is not diamond, and the name should not be confused with “lab-grown diamond”.

Pearls & mother of pearl

Selected designs feature freshwater pearls; others use mother of pearl, the iridescent shell material used for inlays. They are different materials. For example, the Lucky Clover Pearl Studs are described as having mother-of-pearl inlays. Check the listing for the type used in your piece.

A note on colour

Some designs include enamel or coloured stones. A colour such as turquoise-toned or emerald green describes an appearance, not necessarily a particular gemstone. The product description should identify the material; if it is unclear, ask us before ordering.

03 / A little everyday care

Keep the details looking their best

A simple routine goes a long way. Always follow any care instructions supplied for your particular piece, especially when it combines several materials.

  1. Put jewellery on last

Allow perfume, skincare and hairspray to dry before putting your jewellery on. Remove it before showering, swimming, exercise or household cleaning to reduce exposure to moisture, chemicals and knocks.

  2. Clean gently

Start with a soft, clean cloth. Avoid abrasive polishes on plated finishes. Wipe pearls gently after wear and never put them in an ultrasonic or steam cleaner. If you are unsure about a stone or setting, ask before using a cleaning solution.

  3. Store pieces separately

Keep jewellery in individual pouches or compartments so chains, stones and metal surfaces do not rub together. Fasten chains before storing them, and keep pieces away from direct heat and prolonged sunlight.

Good to know

Your materials questions

Is all MAVISSE jewellery waterproof?

Water resistance varies by metal, plating, stones and construction. We do not describe the entire collection as waterproof. Unless the individual care instructions say otherwise, remove your jewellery before showering or swimming and dry it if it becomes wet.

Will the colour or finish change over time?

A finish can change with wear. Silver may tarnish, and plated surfaces may gradually wear where they rub against skin, clothing or other pieces. Care and storage affect this process, so we do not promise that every design will remain unchanged indefinitely.

How do I choose if I have a metal sensitivity?

Start with the full material description of the exact design, including the base metal, plating and earring posts where specified. We do not make a collection-wide nickel-free or hypoallergenic guarantee. If a detail you need is missing, contact us before purchasing.

Does a gold colour mean the piece is solid gold?

No. Gold-tone describes colour, while gold-plated describes a layer over another metal. A carat value in a plating description refers to that gold layer. Always read the full product description rather than relying on colour or a photograph alone.

Where can I check a specific piece?

Open the product page and look for its description and Materials & details. If a material, finish or stone type is not clearly listed, email us with the product name or link. We can check the information for that design before you order.
